(ConservativeFreePress.com) – Biden has focused on shoring up support from trade unions following his Wednesday meeting with the AFL-CIO.

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden met with the AFL-CIO’s executive council, a meeting he was scheduled to attend over a year ago. However, as he looked to shore up support among America’s largest federation of trade unions, there was far more scrutiny on the President due to his debate performance.

During his sit-down with union officials, Biden used a handheld microphone and wasn’t assisted by a teleprompter. He thanked union leaders for supporting him, stating that he considers AFL-CIO his “domestic NATO,” emphasizing it is not a joke.

The President recalled telling union leaders he would be “the most pro-union President in American history,” highlighting that he had achieved that.

When introducing the President, AFL-CIO President and a close personal friend of Biden, Liz Shuler, emphasized Biden’s accomplishments for union workers, lauding him as creating good union jobs in clean energy and supporting manufacturing.

Shuler added that because the President had “always had our back — we have your back.”

The council, composed of over 50 officials and representing 12.5 million union members, released a statement of support hours after the meeting.

In the Wednesday statement, the council highlighted Biden displayed his “fighting spirit” during his back-and-forth with union leaders. They also voted to “reaffirm” their support for the Biden-Harris administration, a far more vague term offering flexibility should Biden step aside.

Yet, this reaffirmed support has strengthened Biden’s resolve. Hours later, in the Oval Office, when asked by a reporter what he thought of an opinion piece in which actor George Clooney asks him to step aside, the President replied: “AFL-CIO!” and, pumping his fists, added, “Go, go, go!”
