BMW’s Major Vehicle Recall

BMW has recalled 720,796 vehicles due to a flaw involving the water pump’s electrical connector. This issue can cause short circuits and increase the risk of fire. Affected models range from 2012 to 2018, including popular versions like the 328i, X1, X3, X5, among others.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on August 19, 2024. The recall number for this issue is “24V-608”. Owners will start receiving notification letters by October 4, 2024. BMW has received approximately 18 customer complaints related to this defect but thankfully no reports of accidents or injuries have surfaced so far.

Inspection and Repair Process

Owners of the recalled vehicles should take their cars to authorized BMW dealers. The dealers will inspect the water pump and plug connector, and if necessary, replace these parts and install a protective shield. All these services will be performed free of charge. BMW has been proactive in addressing this issue. Earlier in July 2024, the company issued two other recalls. On July 24, they recalled over 290,000 vehicles due to faulty bolts, and on July 10, they recalled over 394,000 vehicles due to defective Takata airbag inflators.

The defect involves water pumps with insufficient sealing, making them susceptible to fluid ingress at the electrical plug connector. Fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation system may collect on the intake air hose and cause an electrical short. To mitigate this, a shield will be installed to divert the fluid, reducing the risk of short circuits and fires.
