(ConservativeFreePress.com) – By the end of this year, Texas will likely have self-driving trucks. Uber Freight in collaboration with Aurora Innovation, an autonomous technology developer, is planning on putting the driverless hauls on the Texas highways from Dallas to Houston by the end of 2024.

In late June, the two companies put out an announcement for the new “Premier Autonomy” program which is going to make driverless trucking possible for all sizes of carriers. The program is going to be building on a three-year commercial pilot and is going to make it possible for Aurora’s driverless miles to Uber Freight Carriers to reach 1 billion through 2030.

Uber Freight founder and chief executive officer Lior Ron noted that these trucks are going to increase efficiency in the transportation of goods and that this is the first program in the industry that will help accelerate and facilitate adopting autonomous trucks. The program is going to work in two parts, with the trucks initially continuing to have human drivers. At a later time, Aurora is going to choose which of the carriers on the Uber Freight network are going to be included in the autonomous truck program.

Drivers in the first stage will be required to take control of the vehicle in the trip’s final stretch when the lanes are smaller, however, eventually, the plan is for the drivers to be completely taken out of the trucks. The technology could lead to fundamental changes in American freight transportation and could enable trucks to be on the road for longer without the need for humans.
