Governor Hochul’s Skin Cancer Diagnosis

New York Governor Kathy Hochul revealed her recent diagnosis with skin cancer, specifically basal cell carcinoma, a common and slow-growing type of skin cancer. The basal cell carcinoma was identified on her nose during a routine check-up a few weeks ago. This news has heightened public awareness about the importance of regular skin examinations and sun protection measures.

Hochul, 66, is set to undergo a removal procedure on Friday morning. The procedure will involve local anesthesia, enabling her to return to work shortly after. She reassured the public by stating that she expects to need a bandage on her nose but anticipates a quick recovery.

Understanding Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. It is often related to long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and is highly curable if detected early. According to the Mayo Clinic, avoiding the sun and consistently using sunscreen are effective preventive measures. Fortunately, basal cell carcinoma typically does not metastasize to other parts of the body, making treatment usually very successful.

“I’m going to have a small removal procedure. I’m not going under. It’s local anesthesia. It will be occurring Friday morning. I’ll be back to work an hour later, but there will be a bandage on my nose,” she told reporters.

Governor Hochul mentioned that basal cell carcinoma is common in her family, especially among those of Irish descent. She stressed the importance of routine screenings and diligent skin protection practices, particularly for individuals with a family history of skin disease.

Prevention and Early Detection

The American Cancer Society advises several preventative measures to reduce the risk of skin cancer, such as limiting sun exposure, using sunscreen, and wearing protective clothing. Additionally, avoiding tanning beds, sun lamps, and harmful chemicals can further lower one’s risk. Regular skin checks for any new growths or abnormal spots are crucial for early detection, which significantly improves the outcome of treatment.

“Most basal cell carcinomas are thought to be caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight,” the medical center says. “Avoiding the sun and using sunscreen may help protect against basal cell carcinoma.”

Governor Hochul expressed a commitment to raising awareness about skin cancer prevention. She emphasized teaching children about the importance of sun protection to safeguard their skin from damage. By sharing her personal experience, Hochul aims to underscore the critical role of early diagnosis in effective treatment and to encourage the public to take proactive steps in protecting their skin.
