(ConservativeFreePress.com) – Michael Cohen, once a close ally and former lawyer and fixer to former President Trump, is heading to the Supreme Court. Cohen seeks damages for alleged retaliation during his prison term, a move he alleges was aiming to be a deterrent against future similar actions by Trump or others. His appeal comes after a federal judge ruled that he had unconstitutional retaliation for his criticism of the former President during his time serving home confinement.

Cohen was originally serving a three-year sentence on several charges including campaign finance violations. He previously had argued that some of these violations had been directed by Trump. However, due to health reasons, he was allowed to be released in home confinement before being returned to prison. He was also placed in solitary confinement for having declined waiving his right to criticize Trump. Cohen has maintained that this was an attempt to silence him.

Cohen’s lawsuit targets Trump, several officials, and the federal government for constitutional violations. However, lower courts had previously blocked it. Cohen is now appealing to the Supreme Court, where he is facing big challenges. The court has always been reluctant to take on such cases.

Cohen’s attorney, Jon-Michael Dougherty has maintained that the case goes beyond the individuals involved and that it has wide implications regarding the balance of power between the government and private citizens. He argued that the government had attempted to manipulate the prison system to silence Cohen.

Despite the legal hurdles, Cohen continues to pursue the case, arguing that he is doing so to ensure no one else would face retribution for exercising their First Amendment rights.
